The world currently runs on fossil fuels. As the global population increases and production demands rise, the need for oil and natural gas will continue to grow as well. To meet these needs, riskier drilling processes will be required. It’s important that oil and gas stakeholders use quality equipment to mitigate the environmental and safety risks of these methods.

Hudson Technologies has produced metal deep-drawn battery components for use in the oil and gas exploration industry for decades. Our products are designed to last, reducing the risks inherent in fossil fuel drilling. Many of our battery sizes mimic the size of consumer batteries you could buy at the store, ensuring that they will fit your needs, such as C, double C, D, and double D sizes.

Overview

While many of our batteries match the sizing of consumer batteries, Hudson batteries feature more robust materials within the enclosures. We use stainless steel enclosure walls to provide exceptional durability and corrosion resistance compared to standard store-bought batteries.

Industry Challenges

Used to power GPS and other drill-mounted components digging into the earth’s surface, these batteries must withstand severe environments, high pressures, extreme temperature changes, and strong vibrations. As an example, a GPS unit failure can result in lost time and up to half a million dollars of lost revenue.

To create even more powerful battery packs, our individual battery cells can be combined. Our reliable battery solutions can be used both onshore and offshore in applications including:

  • Seismic surveying
  • Seismic sensing devices/geophones
  • Downhole drilling
  • GPS systems
  • Pipeline inspection gauges (PIGs)
  • Logging while drilling (acquiring and transmitting data remotely)
  • Well-intervention tools
  • Underwater vehicles

Challenges for the Oil and Gas Industries

While fossil fuels are vitally important in modern life, acquiring them can be hazardous. These operations require dependable, durable equipment that can withstand any number of harsh conditions and still perform at optimal levels. There are a few specific challenges these industries must frequently contend with.

Material Sourcing

The oil and gas industry must have access to premium equipment. Quality, high-performance metals are necessary to create mechanical equipment that can be properly used for fracking and gas extraction. Using cheap materials or low-budget designs will ultimately lead to equipment failure in many oil and gas applications.

Mechanical Failure

When equipment isn’t built out of the proper material, failures and malfunctions can lead to lost time, poor product quality, and safety issues. Due to the multitude of negative outcomes caused by mechanical failure, many companies in the oil and gas industry use their own failure analysis technology when working with equipment prototypes and finished products.

This attention to detail helps to ensure the safety and quality of the equipment, allowing greater efficiency and production abilities. By paying attention to the materials used in their equipment, industry leaders are able to reduce the likelihood that poor material choices will lead to a mechanical failure.

Environmental Conditions

Equipment used in the oil and gas industry may encounter any number of difficult conditions and challenges. Some of the factors this equipment must be able to stand up to include:

  • Exposure to light
  • Extreme temperatures (ranging between 200° C and -50° C)
  • Pressure variations
  • Vibrations
  • Corrosion
  • Exposure to volatile materials

By ensuring that all equipment is built by well-equipped experts using high-grade materials, companies in the oil and gas industry are able to protect their workers and their business from mechanical failures.

Case Study : Featured Solution

We recently completed a solution case study for a large customer in the oil and gas industry, who required a quick-engineered solution with the ability to perform at production levels. Hudson Technologies prototyped and produced a deep drawn case and lid fabricated from Alloy 49 material to meet the customer’s expectations. We utilized this custom performance shielding material to deliver a case that offered enhanced performance. The end use of these products is to map the ocean floor, and below using seismic technology to identify new sources of oil and gas.

Catalog tooling was used to deliver early prototypes for initial concept validation testing before the custom case and lid were tooled. Hudson’s design and engineering capabilities were able to combine multiple pieces to deliver a single, high performance product, which gained approval from the client, leading to repeat product partnerships.

Hudson’s design, engineering, and production capabilities worked together with the customer to produce a high-performance product that has worked extremely well. The customer shared with Hudson their satisfaction with the entire process by placing several repeat orders.
