What is Hastelloy?
Hastelloy is primarily composed of nickel and molybdenum, with varying amounts of chromium. Additional elements such as iron, cobalt, or other metals may be added as well, depending on the specific alloy. Hastelloy alloys are specially formulated for excellent temperature tolerances and resistance to corrosion. While these specialty properties make Hastelloy a costly metal, its resilience, longevity, and superior performance in intense environments make it a highly valuable solution for harsh applications.
Hastelloy vs Stainless Steel
While Hastelloy and stainless steel share similar traits, the differences in their compositions make these metals suitable for different applications.
The nickel and chromium in both of these metals increase their corrosion resistance and temperature tolerance. However, while these metals are used to fortify stainless steel, they serve as the primary base of Hastelloy. Combined with molybdenum, which greatly enhances strength and hardness, Hastelloy is built to withstand much harsher conditions than stainless steel.
So, while there are certainly ideal uses and needs for deep drawn stainless steel components, Hastelloy is a better alternative for more intense applications or chemically harsh environments.
Common Types of Hastelloy Alloys
Hastelloy C276
Hastelloy C276 is one of the most widely used Hastelloy alloys, offering exceptional resistance to a large range of severe chemicals, including chlorides, acids, and oxidizing agents. Heavily composed of nickel, this high-performance alloy also includes molybdenum, chromium, iron, and tungsten. Its highly durable and corrosion-resistant properties make Hastelloy C276 a popular alloy for chemical processing applications.
Hastelloy C22
Also part of the C-type Hastelloy alloy group, Hastelloy C22 is a versatile alloy made from high amounts of nickel and chromium. Various amounts of molybdenum, iron, tungsten, and cobalt complete its makeup. This alloy is known for its weldability and is suitable for use in desulfurization systems or pharmaceutical operations.
Hastelloy B3
Hastelloy B3 is part of the B-type Hastelloy alloys, known for their high amounts of nickel and molybdenum. This specific alloy also contains manganese, cobalt, and chromium, increasing its resistance to corrosion and pitting. While this alloy also offers excellent thermal stability, it is not recommended for applications involving oxidizing agents, as they can weaken or deteriorate the metal.
Hastelloy Stamping for Industrial Applications
Hastelloy’s exceptional resistance to corrosion and high temperature tolerance make it an ideal alloy for intensive applications in industries including:
- Aerospace: Heat exchangers, engines, combustion chambers
- Energy Storage: Nuclear and chemical reactors, steam generators
- Oil and Gas: Offshore drilling equipment
